Centara Grand Hotel and Bangkok Convention Centre by BBG-BBGM in Thailand

The Centara Grand Hotel and Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld Plaza was designed by and Tandem Architects is located near the busy intersection of Rama I and Ratchadamri Road in Bangkok, Thailand. Integrated into a multipurpose podium, in addition to the hotel public floors, this large volume houses parking floors and extensive convention facilities. The luxury five-star, 505-key architectural hotel and convention center occupy the northwest quadrant of the fashionable CentralWorld Plaza complex. While circulation and programmatic links exist with the shopping and entertainment center, the hotel and convention centre are meant to retain their own identity.
The iconic Centara Grand Hotel tower soars high above the podium to take its place as a landmark building in the Bangkok skyline. The mass of the podium is a succession of concentric circles layered around the tower shaft. The glass and metal cylinder rises directly from the street to a height of approximately 210 meters. Its architectural expression consists of an arrangement of horizontal banding overlaid onto a strong vertical framework. Dynamism and the play of transparency versus solidity are the hallmarks of the overall design. These elements combine to create a building whose lightness belies its large mass.
The Centara Grand Hotel Thailand tower is integrated into a large, multipurpose podium containing the hotel’s public spaces, including a sky lobby, lobby lounge, three-meal restaurant and bar. This large volume also houses parking floors and extensive convention facilities, which are easily accessed from the street via a dedicated bank of elevators, and are situated in close proximity to the hotel’s ballroom and meeting rooms allowing the two facilities to be used concurrently.
The architecture at the top of the tower unfolds into a dramatic outer shell, culminating in two elongated arches. This imagery is inspired by a young lotus flower blooming high above the water. The graceful architectural gesture evokes the harmony born out of disorder and will become an immediate urban landmark. The dramatic figure of the Centara Grand will be instantly recognized amid the busy skyline of Bangkok.
