The organization of the site is based on zoning the various proposed functions in a manner that the visual impact of the new buildings is minimal on the campus. Located in Japan, the Shell House is a sculptural large shell shaped structure that built in the woods of Karuizawa, located in Kitasaku, Nagano. The Shell House was designed by Japanese Architect Kotaro Ide, ARTechnic Architects, the concrete home building comprises two tubes with oval sections is meant to function as a vacation home, which is able to withstand the humid summers and cold winters of the region. The original 19th Century boathouse of University College Oxford succumbed to arson in 1999. It took the college almost eight years before they organized an invited design competition to replace the former Grade II listed structure. Belsize Architects were one of four architectural practices invited to submit a proposal to meet the college’s requirements for a building which would provide rowing, social and residential facilities. Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects LLP, I M Pei – veteran architect designed the new development, which was commissioned by the rulers of Qatar – the al-Thani family, in what is believed to be his last ‘statement,’ building. The 45,000m2 Museum of Islamic Arts building is located on purpose-built island at the Southern end of Doha bay, and while the exterior was finished in 2006 the museum itself has taken until now to open.
